5 Tips to help you make the most of in person events

Investing in a live event, the money, the time away from your business and life, often the travel to get there, can feel risky. We’ve all been to events that haven’t really hit the mark and therefore felt like a waste. These five tips for in-person events will help you make the most of your next experience and ensure it is worth your time, money and effort.

You have a lot of control over what value we get from a live event

Regardless of who the speakers are or the what the content is about.

It’s all about setting intentions before you go. Setting measures of success that are meaningful to you, and that often means very little to do with attending every session and how many slices you had at the afternoon tea.

We’re so excited for Artful Business Conference 2019 – it’s hard to believe it’s only a few weeks away!  And in the lead up, I wanted to put together a collection of my very best Live Event tips for you.

Set yourself no more than 3 very specific outcomes

Intentionally set yourself no more than 3 very specific outcomes you want from the event. These could be very simple, like “I want to deepen my relationship with person X” or more focussed like “I want three quality leads for my service”.

Having a short, specific list will help you plan your days, what parts of the event you do and don’t participate in and how you make small decisions at the event.

It also feels achievable – because it is – and will give you an absolute high when, after the event, you realise you smashed your goals.

Make REAL Connections

Connect! Engage. Join in.

Make real connections. Have REAL conversations!

Don’t let feelings of unworthiness keep you in the corner. Everyone is there with the same passion in their hearts so you will have something in common, giving you a connection to each person.

Remember heading into it, you are so worthy to be there and your presence is a blessing to your fellow attendees. That’s what being there in-person is all about!

You might make a new friend, find someone to collaborate with, but always work to make the connections themselves as meaningful as possible.

Go at your own pace

Don’t overdo it! If you aren’t feeling a session, leave and go for a walk or take time out. Don’t try to absorb everything.

Write notes you’ll understand when you look at them two weeks later, which might mean you miss a few slides or points. But busting your gut to get everything won’t help you when you don’t remember anything and your notes don’t make any sense.

Artful Business Conference attendees get access to recordings of ALL the sessions – which means you don’t even have to worry about missing a session or two. If you need it you can come back to it when you’re ready.

Follow Up

It’s the one downfall many people attending any live event fall into. If someone says they would like to connect again or hear more from you, believe them and FOLLOW UP!

Be diligent and follow up with them within 72 hours of the event ending. Take into consideration any travel you have but schedule time in your week after the event specifically for this purpose.

Don’t use this next contact as a chance to sell in any way, unless of course they specifically asked for information about a product or service, simply reach out with a “It was fabulous to meet you, let’s connect to chat more”.

Don’t make excuses to yourself like “it’s been too long” or “they won’t remember me” or whatever else is going on in your head

Be Brave. Be honest.  And if you took a while to get to it, simply say “I’m sorry I didn’t follow up earlier. I’d still love to connect / chat, etc”

Be proactive and extend the fabulous conversations and connections you’ll make beyond the event and outside of a comment on each other’s posts in the Facebook group.

You just never know where the deeper connection may lead.

Have a plan before you go.

This relates to the first tip but takes it one step further.

Check out the program, know what sessions you are most looking forward to and what you hope to get out of them, think about who else is going and know who you want to seek out and connect to (attendees or speakers).

Be really clear about HOW you are going to reach each of those goals so when you are in the moment, surrounded by people you don’t know, you can feel confident that you just have to follow the plan.

Of course – be open to the plans going out the window if the event is not what you expected (good or bad).

Trust your instincts and above all else – only choose events with great coffee (we can promise, Artful has great coffee!)
