Trusting yourself takes practice

by | Aug 26, 2019

Like so many things in life, the ability to push your own comfort zone and to trust yourself takes practice.

Is fear stopping you from doing something that matters?

Are you waiting to find a way to the otherside of the fear?

In life or in business fear often gets in our way, and while some fear is helpful, often it is just our inner critic telling us we simply aren’t good enough.

If you are paralysed by fear over simple things such sending that email, or delivering that invoice.

Feel the fear, then do it anyway.

I don’t believe anyone is fearless, or can ever be. The people that get crazy things achieved in this world recognise the fear and push past it to get to the good stuff.

The thing is, learning to trust yourself, to know when to ignore the fear, takes practice.

It’s kind of like exercise. You don’t expect to run a marathon the first time you run, so don’t expect to face your big scary fears if you still can’t send that little email. Be gentle on yourself, but start practicing.

Eleanor Roosevelt had the right idea when she suggested “Do one thing everyday that scares you”. These can be little things like asking for feedback from a client, or trying a new technique in your work. It might even be as simple as cooking a new dish or asking someone for advice. It all counts. It all adds up and it helps you learn to trust your instincts, despite the fear.
